The Musical Alphabet

Learning the language of music starts with it’s alphabet.

In music we have seven different notes. We name these notes using the first seven letters of the alphabet, thus we have the musical alphabet:

A B C D E F G

Applying this to the guitar we have:

*Note: there is always only 1 fret between B & C and E & F

You will notice that we skip frets when we see or play these notes on the guitar fretboard.
These notes are called sharps or flats.
So between A and B we have A sharp which is commonly written as A#, or B flat which is written as Bb. The “b” indicates flat.
In the beginning stages we will focus on the notes without sharps of flats.
